Yraima Cordeiro
Associate Professor IV in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of UFRJ. She holds a Technical Degree in Biotechnology from the Federal Technical School of Chemistry (1994), now IFRJ. She has a degree in Biological Sciences – Medical Modality from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) (1999), a Master's degree (2001) and a Doctorate (2005) in Biological Chemistry from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She has experience in the area of Biochemistry and Biophysics of Macromolecules, mainly working on the following topics: prion protein, protein aggregation and folding, spectroscopy, protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions, phase separation, and screening of protein aggregation inhibitors. She was Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) at UFRJ from 2016 to 2018. She has been the Vice-Coordinator of the PPGCF since 2018. She was awarded the L'Oréal-ABC-UNESCO Grant for Women in Science in 2006. She was an affiliated member of the World Academy of Sciences – TWAS (2010-2014) and an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2012-2016). She has been a FAPERJ Scientist of Our State since 2016 and a CNPq Productivity Fellow (level 1D) since 2019.

Yraima Cordeiro is a researcher and coordinator of Laboratory of Structural Molecular Biology (LaBiME) from the Faculty of Pharmacy – UFRJ. The laboratory conducts research in the areas of:
- Biophysics and biochemistry of macromolecules, with a focus on proteins related to neurodegenerative diseases, such as prion proteins and alpha-synuclein.
- Identification of the molecular mechanisms related to conformational change and aggregation of prion-like proteins.
- Evaluation of the interaction of target proteins (prion protein, alpha-synuclein, among others) with physiological ligands and small organic compounds.
- Selection and characterization of protein aggregation modulators as candidate therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases.
At LaBiME, Yraima Cordeiro supervises undergraduate (scientific initiation and final course projects) and graduate (Master's and Doctoral) students in projects related to the biochemistry and biophysics of proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The projects developed at LaBiME employ spectroscopic, calorimetric, and cell biology (cell culture) techniques to study conformational changes, aggregation, interaction with ligands, and phase transitions of proteins of interest to the research group.
