“"University Extension, under the constitutional principle of the inseparability of teaching, research and extension, is an interdisciplinary educational, cultural, scientific and political process that promotes transformative interaction between the university and other sectors of society" (FORPROEX, 2012).
The guidelines should guide the formulation and implementation of University Extension activities, with the mandatory participation of faculty and/or administrative staff, students, and sectors of society. This allows students to develop a more civic-minded education through interaction with new realities, adding knowledge and experiences beyond those lived in the academic world.
To promote the inseparable link between teaching, research, and outreach in the actions carried out;
1. To contribute to the education of undergraduate and graduate students;
2. To promote the renewal and expansion of the concept of "classroom";
3. Develop with the organic commitment of its structures;
4. To enable new means and processes of production, innovation and knowledge transfer, allowing for greater access to knowledge and the technological, cultural and social development of the country;
5. To institutionally ensure that at least 10% (ten percent) of the total curricular workload of undergraduate courses is dedicated to extension activities.
The essence of the pharmaceutical profession is anchored in meeting patients' needs to promote health, which naturally develops extension processes in its work activities. Therefore, at the Faculty of Pharmacy, extension activities are seen as opportunities to strengthen the link between the University and society, enabling a transformative relationship between them and democratizing academic knowledge, so that both the university and the external community benefit directly and immediately. Furthermore, it is seen as an indispensable academic process in both the training of students and the qualification of faculty and administrative staff.
Extension activities at the Faculty of Pharmacy prioritize practices aimed at meeting social needs and are related to the areas of Education, Health, Technology, and Production. In this way, they expand opportunities, provide knowledge, broaden access to learning, and improve the quality of education in the community, contributing to the solution of some of the country's social problems and fostering an integrated view of the social context.

How to treat wounds with papain?
Access to medication, as well as its proper use, is the first step in establishing a medication policy, which is represented by the dialogical interaction between patients and the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The patient/doctor/pharmacist interaction enables the exchange of information, which will have consequences for therapeutic efficacy, especially in the treatment of wounds. A wound is any interruption in the continuity of body tissue, caused by trauma or triggered by a clinical condition, and is considered a public health problem due to its psychological, social, and economic impact on the patient, with high and increasing costs.

The Brazilian population has a recognized low level of proficiency in English and poor performance in science. This situation does not improve when looking at the university student body, where 40% of students only understand basic reading comprehension in English. Since international science is produced in English, a significant portion of undergraduate students have difficulty understanding the information and extracting the results and conclusions present in scientific articles. Without this fundamental skill, students cannot advance in their scientific careers towards postgraduate studies. Therefore, the objective of this extension course is to train undergraduate students in the health and biomedical fields from different higher education institutions (HEIs) in reading and interpreting scientific articles in English. Special emphasis will be given to attracting students who qualify for affirmative action programs at these HEIs and also the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) at UFRJ. As a final goal, we aim for these students to qualify for future entry into postgraduate programs in the biomedical sciences. To this end, our proposal is to create and implement a series of activities to develop in these students notions of instrumental English, interpretation of results and graphs, improving their general analytical capacity. The implementing team will consist of professors, undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers from the PPGCF.

Access to photoeducation is the first step towards establishing a health education policy, represented by the dialogical interaction between social actors (medication users, the general community, pharmacists, and students). Many diseases have seen significant advances in their spread in recent times, and skin cancer is one of them. Because it is a neoplasm that affects the population gradually, there is little concern about preventive care for this disease. The use of hats, sunglasses, appropriate clothing, avoiding inappropriate times of sun exposure, and the use of sunscreens are effective measures for the prevention of skin cancer. The project “Medications and Mental Health: Promoting the Rational Use of Psychotropic Drugs” is an extension project of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in partnership with the Health Department of the Municipality of Carmo, in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro, aiming to promote and encourage the rational use of psychotropic drugs. Psychotropic drugs are of great importance in the treatment of different mental illnesses and disorders, usually associated with other therapeutic tools to ensure the improvement of patients suffering from psychological distress. On the other hand, excessive and/or inappropriate consumption and the potential for abuse associated with these medications, or even their misuse for periods that may extend beyond what is necessary, represent a serious public health problem. No medication is entirely risk-free and should only be used when there is a real clinical indication. The project in question promotes various training and professional development actions for the health teams linked to the Mental Health Coordination and the Primary Care Coordination of Carmo, making them even better prepared for the qualified and attentive care of patients using psychotropic drugs and the entire population. The project is coordinated by Professor Dr. Maria Letícia de Castro Barbosa from the Faculty of Pharmacy at UFRJ, and also counts on the participation of other UFRJ professors, such as Professor Dr. Milene Rangel (FF, UFRJ), Professor Dr. Aline Guerra M. Fraga (FF, UFRJ) and Professor [Name missing]. Dr. Marina Amaral Alves (IPPN, UFRJ), along with the engagement of several undergraduate students from the Pharmacy course at UFRJ, is working in partnership with the Mental Health and Primary Care teams of the Municipality of Carmo with the objective of promoting the proper management of mental health care and the development of clinical protocols and policies for the safe prescription, use, and distribution of psychotropic drugs. Furthermore, the project aims to clarify and disseminate scientific information about the "Rational Use of Psychotropic Drugs in the Promotion of Mental Health," employing accessible and easily understandable language, with a primary focus on patients, caregivers, and family members. Thrombosis can cause the death of one in four people worldwide each year. It occurs when a clot forms in an uninjured blood vessel, obstructing blood flow to tissues and organs. Several factors can predispose an individual, such as genetics, environment and/or procedures, and pre-existing conditions like sickle cell disease and cancer, among others. Disseminating knowledge about this pathology is becoming increasingly crucial for its prevention and early diagnosis, thus facilitating treatment and preventing possible complications arising from these events, which can lead to permanent sequelae or even death. Our goal is to teach high school students in Rio de Janeiro how to analyze scientific data and find reliable sources online. To achieve this, we will develop activities where students themselves will create scientific outreach products for new media. Students will be divided into groups and will be responsible for choosing the topic, research sources, and the type of final product. The team will act as moderators, demonstrating reliable sources, appropriate language for dissemination, and addressing ethical issues such as plagiarism online. The resulting products will be disseminated online through the scientific outreach channel "A Porta de Marfim" (The Ivory Door). Learn more about the project!
